Scotchman's Creek Trail


Over the past month I have been working on increasing the distance I can walk to the level I could before breaking my ankle six months ago.  Due to the damage I did to the soft tissue, until recently I could only walk, or more accurately limp, around a kilometre or so.

I still have a way to go, and my ankle still swells up every day, and aches when I do too much.  I still don’t have the balance I used to have so need to be very careful as I walk, and I have to walk slower than I used to.  But I am making progress.  I have been told by both my doctor and my physio that this type of injury takes around eighteen months to fully recover from, so I am trying to be patient.

I am very lucky to live in Melbourne where there are some great walking trails.  Today Paul and I decided to walk along the Scotchman’s Creek Trail.  My longest walk since my injury which I did last weekend was 7.5kms, and as today’s walk was fairly flat, I wanted to walk at least 8kms.  I ended up walking nearly nine and a half kilometres.





The Scotchman’s Creek Trail is one I haven’t done in several years and is a lovely walk along the creek, at one stage going under the Monash Freeway through a long tunnel.

  1. sounds like you're healing up nicely. It is so hard to be patient tho'. The trail you walked looks so peaceful-what great scenery to walk through.

  3. I too had poor balance but took a Tai Chi class last winter and that really helped my balance issues. Still do it several times a week as it just feels good.

    Glad you are getting around better now. In time the swelling will stop or won't occur so often so don't loose hope.

  4. Thanks so much for the walk, I have sent the details to my son who lives in Melbourne and he is going to try it. I also may give it a go when we get to Melbourne next week, flying in for a visit from the UK. Hope to visit the Melbourne show, will you be there?

  6. I broke my ankle nearly 10 years ago and thought I would never again enjoy walking as I had before. I experienced so much worry and distress but it was a waste of a worry as I think the foot which is pinned and plated is my best foot. I did get some physio exercises which I did at home and had gym three times a week. I also resorted to ice packs when it was swollen and inflamed. All the best - I was in my 50s. You look much younger so definitely should make a good recovery. Assume you will!! regards Mary
