3D Baltimore

This exquisitely stitched appliqué quilt was made by Pam, and if you look closely at the photos you can see that many of the flowers are individually made and stitched on.

Pam asked me to background fill around her appliqué to make it pop, which I did with a small curl design, and to quilt feathers in the border.

  1. Lovely, lovely, lovely... both the exquisite applique and your stunning quilting. Quick question, on the right hand boarder, did you quilt the flower design first, and then go back and make the feathers around it? It is such a fitting design. I absolutely love it!

  6. That is a beautiful applique quilt and your quilting isn't too shabby either ;)
Question - How did you handle the thickness of the appliques when rolling this quilt on the frame or did you float the top?

  8. Kathy - Yes I do float my quilts, and I will post a tutorial on how I do it tomorrow. When rolling the quilt forward there was additional bulk in the take up roller. I monitored this, and in this case it was manageable and didn’t distort the quilt. However, if it did distort the quilt I would have put scraps of wadding between the 3D appliqué to balance the bulk.

  10. Renee - Yes, I did quilt the flower first. I chalked in two circles for the inner flower and the outer edge to give me a guide line. Then I freehand quilted the flower. Next I chalked the stems of the feathers. When I came to quilt the feathers I filled the space around the flower.

  13. Thanks Desley... I quilt on my Bernina 830 and usually just turn the corner with my feathers. I like this idea so much nicer... I can think of a couple of designs that would fit quite nicely depending on the top. As I said earlier, absolutely gorgeous!
