More Square Feathered Wreaths

This small quilt was made by Anna.

It was quilted with a combination of feathers, ditch stitching, and straight lines in the sashing.

Square Feathered Wreaths

There were a lot of mini feathered wreaths on Jill’s quilt which was designed by Sandra Boyle.

Jill asked me to take the feathers out to the edges of the square.  I really liked the effect on this quilt as it filled the plain areas completely, and complimented the design of the quilt.

All of the pieced blocks were ditch stitched.

Hearts Desire

Exquisitely appliquéd, this stunning quilt was made by Wendy, and the design is by Esther Aliu called Hearts Desire.

Wendy’s quilt was a pleasure to quilt.  I quilted a background fill of small curls to make the appliqué pop. I also quilted feathers around some of the border, and around the centre block.  Some of the larger pieces of appliqué were outlined to anchor it.

Crazy Anne

The quilt was made by Chris Serong in gorgeous reproduction fabrics on a striking yellow background.  She is teaching this quilt at the Australasian Quilt Convention next year.

This was the quilt on the machine when I broke my ankle last year.  I was in the hospital on the phone to my sister explaining to her how to take it off as I didn’t want it on the machine unsupervised as the last of the renovations were going on.

Luckily Chris was patient as it didn’t get back on the machine for several months as I needed to stand to do the ruler work.

I wanted to make the quilting on the border interesting and broke it into two areas mirroring the shape around the stars blocks.

I had a lot of trouble deciding what to quilt around the stars.  I tried quilting feathers but they didn’t look right so I unpicked them.  I was a lot happier with the straight lines echoing the piecing.

Chris entered in into the Sydney Quilt Show and it was lovely to see it bound and hanging.

Reproduction Fabrics and Traditional Quilting

When Marion brought me this quilt my heart skipped a beat.  Even my husband, when he saw it on my machine, said that it is my kind of quilt as it is the design and fabrics I personally favour.

Marion gave me artistic freedom to quilt it asking me to quilt it heavily with lots of feathers.  I was in heaven.

I quilted the straight lines in the sashing with the feathers in between to really emphasise it as a connector between the circular blocks.

The square piecing between the sashing I also quilted with some straight lines so the quilting here was more noticeable.

Each circular block was quilted differently with a combination of feathers and ditch stitching

Feathered Star

This gorgeous quilt was made by Gail, and of course I wanted to quilt feathers on it.  I really like Gail’s fabric choices with the dark red for the points of the stars giving it a strong focus.

I quilted straight lines on the main point of the star to give some contrast to the curved feathers and background fill.

The back shows the quilting beautifully.

Modern Pickle Dish

When Maree brought me this pickle dish quilt I was thrilled as I knew it would push me out of my comfort zone.  She wanted modern quilting, and specified no feathers.

I knew I needed to do something more abstract with straight lines, and possibly pebbles.  I had a fairly strong idea of how I was going to quilt it before I loaded it, but I didn’t have every detail decided.

After loading the quilt the first thing I did was stabilise it.  All the rings were ditch stitched and I quilted the straight lines that make the square in the centre of the ring.

The four-diamond shape in the centre of the rings came to me whilst I was about half way though stabilising the quilt.  I quilted one in to see if I liked it and I thought it worked really well as it mirrored the pebbling I did where the rings met.
