Cute Teddy Bear Quilt

This cute teddy bear quilt was made by Julie and her daughter.  Whilst I am not taking custom quilting at the moment, Julie sent me a picture of this little quilt and gave me artistic freedom in the quilting.  It inspired me, so I agreed to quilt it for her.

I quilted each block with different background fills, matching the thread colour.  I used a total of twenty-six different thread colours in the quilt.

I had fun with the border adding zig zags to break up the area.

Daisy Basket

This is Bronwyn's design which she calls Emma's Basket.  The templates are available through Victorian Textiles.

Bronwyn wanted the baskets to pop so didn't want allover quilting.

I continuous curved the white in the basket and quilted a daisy with two leaves above each basket.

Around the basked I quilted an intense allover daisy and leaf design.  I varied the sizes of the daisies to give interest.

To define the border I quilted a larger daisy design which I echoed and then quilted straight lines approximately half an inch apart.

The quilting shows really well on the white back.

Daisy Border

This is Barbara's gorgeous Dresden Plate quilt made with 1930s fabrics. She decided to have a random daisy design quilted in the border.

Barbara chose a background fill of small curls around the plates, which made the sashing and applique pop.

Applique Quilt

This gorgeous applique quilt was made by Coral.

It was drafted from a small picture in a book – Birds ‘n Roses by Margaret Docherty.   The picture was of the Garden Quilt by Josephine Craig 1933.  Coral enlarged the picture and from that made templates for the applique.

I quilted feathers in the larger plain areas, and McTavished the background.

I did small pebbles around the applique to make it stand out next to the McTavishing.

Kelmscott Part Two

I have now quilted several variations of Michele Hill’s Kelmscott quilt.   This beautiful example is Ruth’s quilt.

Ruth asked me to quilt it in a similar manner to the one depicted in Michele’s book, with circles around some of the appliqué, and a combination of background fills of meandering, echoing, and peacock feathers.

To see some other variations of this quilt click the links below.

And probably my favourite, Margaret’s Quilt, as she gave me a lot of scope for quilting feathers between the appliqué blocks.

I have linked to Esther’s Blog for her WIP on Wednesdays.

Kelmscott Part One

Judith made this gorgeous appliqué quilt for her daughter’s birthday.  It is a variation of Michele Hill’s Kelmscott quilt in her book William Morris in Applique.

Judith chose to have me quilt the background around the appliqué with leaves and scattered flowers.

I will show another example of this quilt tomorrow.

Huge Appliqué Quilt

Hand appliqué and pieced, this beautiful quilt was made by Jenny as a present for a friend's granddaughter for her 21st birthday.

Jenny worked solidly on this quilt, sometimes over ten hours a day, starting it in October 2011, and finishing it in May this year, which I think is a tremendous effort.

I echo quilted around the appliqué, and I really like the effect in the centre of the quilt.  In the appliqué border I quilted some leaves in the larger areas as well to create some interest.  The cream border was just perfect for feathers.

Green and White Quilt

Stylish and elegant come to my mind when I look at this quilt made by Carole.

I love the effect the different sized pebbles have made on this quilt.

Stars and Feathers

This quilt was made by Chris Serong.  She will be teaching it at Goldfield Quilters in Castlemaine this November.

There was a lot of background in this quilt. The centre of the star is a circle, and I wanted to emphasise this circular aspect.

A Pretty Quilt for a Girl

Cheryl made this for her grand daughter.  I have quilted a number of this design over the years and I think it is a lovely quilt.

Cheryl wanted me to emphasise the appliqué, so I did small loops in the background and outlined the larger appliqué.  Cheryl chose an allover freehand daisy and butterfly pattern for the remainder of the quilt.

Japanese Girls Quilt

This cute quilt belongs to Jean.  I quilted double loops in the background, daisies in the sashing and random straight lines in the border, which I call chopsticks.

Feathers with Curved Cross Hatching

I was given this quilt by Anthea last year with instructions to quilt it heavily with traditional quilting.

I had a lot of fun doing it, but boy did it take me a long time.

I was really happy with how the curved cross hatching and feathers look in the border.

Last year I did a great class with Carla Barrett at Feathered Fibers called Quilt Whispering, where you look at developing your quilting design skills.  One aspect of the class is that you can send pictures of a quilt to Carla and she will draw on it suggested quilting designs.

I did this with Anthea’s quilt, and the design Carla suggested can be seen in her post here.

I liked what Carla did, but I had some different ideas. I had already planned to do curved cross hatching and feathers in the border, and pebbles as the background fill.

One thing I did take from Carla’s quilting design was to put a little flower in the border to create a point that the feathers could come from.

I am glad that Anthea chose a plain back as it shows the quilting beautifully.
