Steam Punk

This is Jen Kingwell's Design Steam Punk.  Many of the fabrics in this quilt were purchased when I was in Canada in January 2018, so they bring back some happy memories.

I changed the pattern a little by not including the blocks in the setting triangles and piecing the sashing.  

When the quilt was finished as per the pattern it didn't look complete to me so I decided to add the border of applique circles which I think frames it nicely.

The back was pieced with the blocks I decided not to use in the setting triangles.

Two Applique Quilts

Both of these applique quilts were designed by Jill Gray of Peppertree House Designs.

I quilted the blue one for Connie recently.  The quilting design continuing the leaves into the borders was included in the pattern.  Connie marked the quilting design onto the border lightly in pencil for me to follow.

All the seams were ditch stitched and the applique outlined.

The pink applique quilt belongs to Beryl.  I quilted it with  background fill of small curls, and feathers in the border.

Applique Quilt

This gorgeous applique quilt was made by Coral.

It was drafted from a small picture in a book – Birds ‘n Roses by Margaret Docherty.   The picture was of the Garden Quilt by Josephine Craig 1933.  Coral enlarged the picture and from that made templates for the applique.

I quilted feathers in the larger plain areas, and McTavished the background.

I did small pebbles around the applique to make it stand out next to the McTavishing.

Pam’s House Quilt

This sweet quilt was made by Pam using both needle turn and blank stitch appliqué. 

I did small meandering on the background and outlined a lot of the appliqué so the houses pop.  I especially love the colours. 

Hearts Desire

Exquisitely appliquéd, this stunning quilt was made by Wendy, and the design is by Esther Aliu called Hearts Desire.

Wendy’s quilt was a pleasure to quilt.  I quilted a background fill of small curls to make the appliqué pop. I also quilted feathers around some of the border, and around the centre block.  Some of the larger pieces of appliqué were outlined to anchor it.

A Week of Quilts – Day Six

This gorgeous appliqué quilt belongs to Judy.  It was a big ‘0’ birthday present from her friendship group – the world wide wanderers.  What a special gift!

The large area in the middle of the quilt screamed for feathers. I also quilted flowers, swirls and a background fill of pebbles to make the appliqué pop.

A Week of Quilts – Day Two

This is Carolyn’s cute appliqué owl quilt.

I quilted small curls as a background fill and stars and loops on the border and sashing.

Large Appliqué Quilt

This gorgeous and very large appliqué quilt was made by Margaret, and it was a pleasure to quilt.

I love feathers, and there were plenty of large open spaces for me to quilt feathers, so I was happy.

Kelmscott Part Two

I have now quilted several variations of Michele Hill’s Kelmscott quilt.   This beautiful example is Ruth’s quilt. 

Ruth asked me to quilt it in a similar manner to the one depicted in Michele’s book, with circles around some of the appliqué, and a combination of background fills of meandering, echoing, and peacock feathers.

Kelmscott Part One

Judith made this gorgeous appliqué quilt for her daughter’s birthday.  It is a variation of Michele Hill’s Kelmscott quilt in her book William Morris in Applique.

Judith chose to have me quilt the background around the appliqué with leaves and scattered flowers.

I will show another example of this quilt tomorrow.

Appliqué and Feathers

This gorgeous (and huge) appliqué quilt belongs to Allison.  I quilted this back in August.  Right now I think about my life in terms of ‘before the broken ankle’ and ‘after the broken ankle’.  Even though August wasn’t that long ago, it feels like another lifetime.

 

It was quilted with two ovals of feathers mirroring the shape of the appliqué, and McTavishing on the background.  

 

I did a small row of pebbles next to the feathers to emphasise them.

The back showed the quilting beautifully.

In my next post I will show how I marked the feathers and the order in which I quilted this large quilt.
